How is Google Gemini changing Search, will this impact SEO?

Google Gemini has now been rolled out into search and you may have seen some AI generated results, what does this mean for SEO in 2024/25?

You may have started not notice some AI Overviews coming into your search results over the last week on Google. These are smart structured snippets which are generated based on the search query and then utilising Google’s powerful AI tool Gemini.

AI & Search

Google has been rolling out AI throughout its offering, whether you are using search, reviewing analytics or putting together an Ad, Google AI is there. Whether you like it or not it will be here to stay, Google has said previously it believes AI to be the future of search.

Google’s AI Overviews are showing up on both mobile and desktop, at least at the time of writing this article in the UK in 2024. Soon billions of search queries will be getting AI generated snippets, as Google learns and adapts its model to work on other queries, this has the power to be a really useful and quick tool, but also the potential to disrupt search altogether.

Search Disruption

Google’s Gemini and AI Overview results will no doubt shake up a lot of search, a study in 2023 said this could be between 18 – 64%. It is Google’s aim for you, where possible, find the answer you need directly on search.

There will no doubt be significant disruption for various searches and depending on the industry type, if you are an information based website, this may be big for you. However on the flip side, there are industries it likely won’t impact much, such as restaurants, shops, services and local businesses where there is a product or service for sale.

SEO & Gemini

It is yet to be known whether Gemini will play into Google’s existing algorithms to decide which bit of information is most accurate or should be displayed first, I imagine just like with Search over time they will make sure this will be limited so that it can’t be exploited, using reliable sources will be it’s key to ensure the data it learns from for their AI models is reliable.

Opportunities

You will notice when seeing these results, there will be websites on the right hand side, videos and other links, citations to their explanation and present websites which either they used for this information or websites related / similar to your search query. This will present a huge opportunity for businesses where their questions are already ranking high or their website schema with rich snippets are in place that Google can easily crawl to find the information.

Final notes

While it is clear that this will be one of the biggest shakeups to search in recent years, we think there are pros and cons to this, at the moment the way the Gemini results are showing it is quite informative, showing information almost like a concise wikipedia query with the information you are asking about specifically is the focus of the information, which is incredible.

The Search landscape for businesses, services, restaurants and companies we work with, we don’t see this impacting their search traffic, we look for opportunities with an ever changing landscape online, where one door closes, two more open, we continue to be at the front with this so that we can leverage any benefit to our clients.
