So, what Are MCPs and what is the new A2A? Let’s break it down in as simple terms as possible.
Model Context Protocol is a framework announced by Anthropic, an open standard for connecting AI systems with data sources, replacing fragmented integrations with a single protocol. Currently system to system communication and instructions, most of the time come via API systems where the user has their API key and then they can program or automate a system to do one thing based on whether they are adding, deleting, updating, or any other command built into the API system.
MCPs flip all of this on it’s head, allowing the AI to read your natural language prompt, make the relevant API call via the MCP and the MCP server broadcasts available commands the AI can call on.
MCPs will be game changing – there it is again! We won’t say it anymore, but it is implied. No longer do we need to automate every aspect of the API depending on what we want to do, whether it is to update tasks on Clickup one by one, we can just ask the AI model to update the task or delete the task and it will take care of everything else.
Agent2Agent Protocol announced by Google enables different AI agents to communicate and collaborate, whether they are hosted or not, like a universal language for AI allowing tools to work together seamlessly across platforms. Think of it as the ability for one AI agent which is capable of a task to then go and speak to another AI agent and process requests between each other.
Imagine a customer service AI agent resolving a query by coordinating with a billing agent that can then find the required billing information, then go and check with the stock system, or other systems managed by other services and finally bring it back to the customer.
